In the Digital Engineering (DE) space I provide training, specification and RFT writing, tender assessment,  project management of DE (DE Manager) , project advisory support  and other consulting. See also the testimonials in the Ref’s tab and see the Services tab

  • BIM Means Building Information Model or modelling or management of your information using BIM tools.

  • My focus is on information management using computer tools (hence the word "digital"); not limited to 3D but usually 3D based, wherever practicable.

  • Whilst DE is more than BIM (also includes GIS and a lot of other things), for simplicy on this web-page I've emphasised BIM.

  • I’m approved as a DE Manager (ref ISD 176396) on the Transport for NSW Digital Engineering Panel

  • See also my CV for DE training via a link at the end of this webpage

2A SECTIONING - CUTTING CROSS SECTIONS USING A FREE VIEWER

As design manager on many projects (M7 & M5-East motorways, Hong Kong sewerage tunnels and treatment plants, Singapore underground metro stations and tunnels and so on) I review and approve thousands of drawings. It’s always a concern that sections and details created using 2D CAD might not exactly match plans and other drawings also drawn in 2D. But not any more! BIM with 3D provides a single source of truth and any section must be consistent with every other view of the same data. However I have not been able to find Autodesk guidance or YouTube videos to show the simple but essential task of sectioning to create cross sections and long sections or in fact any section you wish. I’ve created my own video, which I hope you’ll find useful. Please provide me with feedback regarding this video and any others you would like me to create. I used Navisworks Freedom but other viewers will do the same job.

A Youtube “unlisted video” submitted by Norman Disney and Young (NYD) regarding Westconnex M4 East tunnel Digital Engineering for CSJ Design Joint Venture. Emphasis is on tunnels services design however the relevance of DE to civils design can be easily seen.

4. UK GOVERNMENT MANDATE MAY 2011

  • Here is a link to "The UK Government Mandate" May 2011 gov.uk construction-strategy . Look at the 495 Kb document, Clause 2.32 on Page 14 where collaborative 3D is mandated as follows: "(UK) Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016." The descriptor says "The (UK) Government Construction Strategy is the framework for a range of workstreams, all of which have the ultimate aim of reducing the cost of government construction projects by 15-20% by the end of the current Parliament."
